The 2026 Student Challenge is a Canada-wide student challenge organized by Innovation North in partnership with ATCO SpaceLab. Now in its third year, Innovation North’s annual Student Challenge gives students hands-on experience applying systems thinking to real-world problems. Previous Challenges explored the future of retail and local communities with Walmart Canada, and loneliness and mental wellness at work with BMO.  

This year’s Challenge will explore the complex issue of housing—an area shaped by many sectors, stakeholders, and perspectives. Housing sits at the intersection of economic forces, public policy, technology, and community needs, making it a challenge that can’t be solved with simple or one-size-fits-all solutions.  

How It Works 

To participate, you’ll need to form a team of 3–5 eligible students. As part of the application process, your team will complete a short screening challenge designed to assess your readiness to engage with complex problems. It’s not about having the “right” answers but instead demonstrating curiosity, openness, and a willingness to think beyond quick ideas. 

Once accepted, you’ll receive a briefing document that introduces this year’s challenge, along with access to a five-part podcast series on how to use systems thinking to tackle complex problems. Each week, you’ll be encouraged to listen to the podcast and join an optional virtual session to discuss what you’re learning with other participants. 

As a team, you’ll create and submit a deliverable that shows how your understanding of the challenge has evolved and how your thinking has developed over time. Submissions will be reviewed blindly by a judging panel of expert practitioners and leading academics in systems thinking and tackling complex problems. 

Select teams will be invited to a showcase event in Toronto. There, you’ll deepen your understanding of the challenge, engage directly with leaders from ATCO, and receive guidance from experienced mentors. At the end of the weekend, you’ll tell the story of how your thinking changed and how that shaped your understanding of the challenge. 

Your team will have the chance to earn up to $15K in cash prizes and additional opportunities to partner with Innovation North. Finalists will also earn a digital badge via Credly to display on LinkedIn or include on their resume.

Eligibility 

The 2026 Student Challenge is open to all post-secondary students across Canada. This includes undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students at any university or college from any discipline of study.  

Students must form a team of 3-5 members and submit one application for their team. Teams can include a mix of degree levels and programs and can also include students from multiple post-secondary institutions.

1. Form a team of 3-5 students and ensure all team members meet the eligibility requirements. 
2. As a team, review and complete the screening challenge. 
3. Submit your application by January 31, 2026 at 11:59PM ET.
